Heljestorp recycling plant - Landfill bottom coverage

Heljestorp outside Vänersborg and Trollhättan in Västra Götaland receive and handle approximately 500,000 tons of waste per year, that comes from industries, construction, municipalities, trade and households. In addition, the facility can store hazardous and non-hazardous waste. It can handle tyres that are recycled through shredding and granulation. Also can treat contaminated soils, ashes and sludge. The plant also processes sewage sludge into plant soil and sludge for spreading on arable land.

As a cover for the bottom of newly built landfill extension, EUROBENT 4500-125 was used. In this project approximately 7000 sq meters were needed. When placing rolls at the bottom of landfill extra care should be taken, and also consecutive rolls overlapping. Thanks to additional bentonite impregnated at the long edge of each roll minimize the amount of bentonite that has to be added between overlaps. This prevents the leakage of dangerous substances.

The reason to use GCL within a landfill base is that it works like a sealant beneath the waste mass. This is one of the most important advantage of using our geosynthetic clay liner. It brings not only many savings, but protects the environment.
