Germany, 2021 - Rehabilitation of MDK lock Strullendorf - Robust base for a riprap in the upper lock approach area

In the upper lock approach area, the stone fill in the canal bottom had to be replaced. The stone fill is then additionally clamped with underwater concrete. Over the years, the stones had been rubbed against each other by the current turbulence caused by the propellers of commercial shipping. The new 1,800 Nm BAW certified SandMat 600/200 was selected and installed as the separating layer between the channel bottom and the rockfill. The original stone fill was carefully removed without damaging the canal bottom and sealing. The mat is then used: it is the separating and protective layer on the canal bottom under the stone fill.

The rollers mounted on the working platform are picked up by a hydraulically controlled laying traverse. The sand mats are laid according to the laying plan. The positions are checked and recorded by GPS. Another excavator fixes the sand mat with the excavator shovel to prevent it from slipping during the laying process. Immediately afterwards, the sand mat is partially covered with the stone fill. The connections for the following sand mats are kept free and only completely covered afterwards.

The SandMat 600/200 can be used without restriction in all areas of hydraulic engineering and projects where extremely robust products are required.

Underwater installation is possible without any problems, as the mat sinks immediately without a buoyancy aid due to the quartz sand filling.

As an erosion protection layer in hydraulic engineering, BAW SandMat 600/200 1,800 Nm prevents the discharge of soil material by swell and current, which in the worst case could lead to the collapse of the bank fill.
